When I switched over to Windows 10, I was so upset that I couldn’t get the game to run smoothly. My graphics were flashing pink or blue, and I would crash every time I tried to take my Sim to a different lot. If you’re having the same problem, it’s an easy fix! You just need to install the 4GB patch.
And if that doesn’t work, there are several other things you can try listed below. This article contains EVERYTHING I KNOW about getting your game to work on Windows 10.
Last updated: 02/16/2021 (Updated with DXVK fix)
Increasing Available Memory
A windows update in late 2017 or early 2018 caused this bug to start happening to everyone playing The Sims 2. But the good news is it isn’t hard to fix.
The Sims 2 is an old game and it only uses 2GB of your available memory. You need a special patch for the game to access 4GB in Windows 10. When installed properly, you won’t run out of memory while you play and your game won’t crash and your graphics won’t flash pink anymore.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get your game running again with no crashes and no flashing graphics.
Step 1: Inspect Your Config Log
First, I’ll show you how to make sure this is what’s causing your problem. And when we’re done, I’ll show you how to make sure it really worked.
Open up your Documents folder and navigate to the following path:
Documents > EA Games > The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection > Logs
NOTE: If you don’t have the UC, the path will be the same. It will just say “The Sims 2” only instead of “The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection.”
Find the log file that looks like the one above. It will be the name of your computer followed by -config-log.
Open the file. It will look like this:
Look for the rows that say “Memory” and “Free Memory.” If your game is only using 2GB, it will say 2048 here instead of 4096.
NOTE: I have already installed the patch in my game, so that’s why the memory shows 4096 in this screenshot.
If your log file says 2048 MB, installing the 4GB patch will fix the problem. Congratulations! Let’s fix it!
Step 2: Download the 4GB Patch
Visit the NTCORE website to download the 4GB patch.
Unzip the .exe file onto your desktop or anywhere you like. You can delete it after you install the patch, so it doesn’t really matter.
Step 3: Install the Patch
Now pay attention, because you have to install it properly or it won’t work.
Double click on the .exe file after you download and unzip it.
Your file explorer will then open up. Navigate to the following location:
Windows (C:) > Program Files (x86) > Origin Games > The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection > Fun with Pets > SP9 > TSBin
If you have the disc version of the game instead of the UC, navigate to this location:
Windows (C:) > Program Files (x86) > EA Games > The Sims 2 Mansion and Garden Stuff > TSBin
NOTE: If you don’t have Mansion and Garden Stuff, navigate to the TSBin of the most recent expansion pack you have.
Select the .exe of your game in this folder, and then click “Open.” You should get a pop-up that looks like this:
Click OK and the box will disappear.
A backup .exe file should have been created in your TSBin folder. That’s normal, so don’t worry about it. This means your game is successfully patched.
Step 4: Make Sure it Worked
- Load your game and allow it to load to the neighborhood selection screen (at least). This will update your config log.
- Close your game and return to your desktop.
- Open up your config log from your documents folder again (as in step 1). It should now say 4096 in the memory line.
- Congratulations! The Sims 2 will now run on Windows 10 and your days of crashing and flashing pink graphics are over.
Troubleshooting
If you’re still having issues after applying the patch, there are a few more things you can try. The Sims 2 is picky with modern graphics cards.
The 4GB Patch Won’t Apply (Memory Does Not Change in Log)
Recently a Patron of mine was having trouble getting the 4GB patch to apply. We tried literally everything I could think of and her memory would not change in the Config Log. I have had several comments and emails about this too.
Here’s how we fixed it and got her playing right away.
Drag the .exe file from your TS Bin to your desktop and apply the 4GB patch there. Check your log file to make sure it applied. Your memory should be updated. Then you can use the shortcut you just created on your desktop to play the game.
Moving the .Exe File – DISC VERSION ONLY!
If you have the disc version of the game, it might be necessary to move the .exe file to another folder. I have no idea why this is necessary for some computers and not others. If nothing else works, try this!
Make a backup of your folders before you do this in case you screw something up. I warned you. Also, please note if you have the Ultimate Collection this will not work for you!
The patch will automatically apply to the TSBin. Cut and paste the Sims2EP9.exe file into the CSBin.
The CSBin directory is shown above. If this doesn’t work for you, move the .exe file back into TSBin (or restore from backup) and try something else.
Graphics Rules Maker
Everyone using Windows 10 to play The Sims 2 should use the graphics rules maker.
This program is easy to install and makes “rules” for the game to follow so that it recognizes your graphics card. This will allow you to play in 1920 x 1080 resolution and make your game look the best it possibly can. See the creator’s website for further instructions. Make sure to read everything to ensure your settings are correct.
Direct X 9.0 Error After Using Graphics Rules Maker
If you get a Direct X or Access Violation error trying to run your game after using Graphics Rules Maker, you need to download a separate fix.
There’s one version for UC and one version for discs. There are fixes available for both Nvidia and Radeon graphics cards. Read the instructions carefully before installing.
My Game Won’t Start
If you’re game doesn’t start at all after applying the patch and using the graphics rules maker, you most likely need to delete your cache files. Navigate to:
C:\Users\YourName\Documents\EA Games\The Simsβ’ 2 Ultimate Collection
You will see two files in this folder at the very bottom:
- Accessory.cache
- Groups.cache
Delete both of them and start your game again. Don’t worry! This is completely safe and your game will generate new cache files after you start it up.
To prevent having to do this again, see the instructions here for making your cache files read-only. You will never have to delete them again. If you don’t do this, you may have to delete the files again the next time your game doesn’t start. No big deal, but a little annoying.
My Memory Still Won’t Update (DISC VERSION)
If you’ve made it all the way to the end of this tutorial and your memory STILL doesn’t update, there is one more fix that seems to work for even the most severe cases. You need to use a No-CD crack. (Don’t worry it’s perfectly legal since you own the discs.)
- Replace your .exe file with the more flexible version found on this page: http://www.leefish.nl/mybb/showthread.php?tid=7800&pid=40665#pid40665
- Click on the βNo CD Hack for M&Gβ to download.
- Rename Sims2EP9.exe to Sims2EP9.___exe.
- Copy the new .exe file you downloaded into your CSBin folder (where the original is).
- Apply the patch to the new .exe file and try again. You may need to apply the patch on the desktop and then move to CSBin if that doesnβt work.
NONE OF THIS WORKS! MY GAME IS STILL CRASHING! (DXVK Fix)
If you’ve exhausted every other option, there’s one more thing you can try. Don’t ask me how or why this works, but it seems to do the trick when none of the other options work. When Mr. Pleasant couldn’t play Sims 2 on his new computer, this was the only thing that stopped the crashing and purple soup.
I have removed my instructions from this guide, as they have become outdated. Instead, see THIS DOCUMENT with current instructions for using the DXVK Fix, plus more advanced troubleshooting options.
If I find more information that might help, I will add it to this article in the future. If these fixes work for you (or if you have any problems), leave a comment below and let me know!
For me and my NVIDIA graphics card, These are the steps that worked for me.
1. I used this link and follow step 2 on this site. I downloaded George, renamed sims2ep9 to old and dropped George in the same folder.
http://www.leefish.nl/mybb/showthread.php?tid=9047&pid=45659#pid45659
2. I used graphics rules maker and used auto detect.
3. I updated my graphics drivers.
The pink flashes and loading issues were gone for me after that. I hope this helps someone.
Hi Cindy,
I’m having an issue with my Sims 2 and I feel like you’re the only one that can help me. My sims 2 game was playing fine last night however this morning I wake up and want to play it but it won’t launch, I press play in origin and origin minimizes as if its loading the game and not long after origin pops back up and the game doesn’t launch. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the game, back up’d and deleted my mods/cc and my custom neighbourhoods and still nothing. I have no idea what to do to try and fix this issue.
Kind Regards,
Fellow Simmer.
Hi! This is usually because you need to delete your cache files. That’s the only reason I’ve ever had for the game just not to launch. Delete “accessories.cache” and “groups.cache” from your Documents > EA Games > Sims 2 folder. Hope it works for you!
My Solution at the end of my post: For the past week and a half I’ve been trying to get the Origin Sims 2 Ultimate to run on my Windows 10 Professional PC, with 64GB RAM, Intel 2.9GHz Hex-Core and 8GB Radeon GPU, I NEVER had any issues with this game on Win Vista, Win 7 or Win 8.1. This week I tried everything people had posted about and at first the game was Crashing on load, then when I finally was getting it to load it was taking about 17 minutes just to open the main menu (even with the 4GB patch), Then it was crashing in the load neighborhood menu and when I FINALLY got it to load the children were Neon pink.
Today I saw an older post mentioning Securom and even though the Origin Ultimate collection supposedly has it removed I decided to try the Removal Tool and though it said no Securom elements were detected I ran it anyway & now my game is running smoothly.
(TLDR) My solution ended up being:
1) Run Graphics Rules Maker
2) Run Securom Removal Tool
3) Place an “Illegal” cracked/pirate exe in the Fun with Pets bin
4) Run the 4GB patch on the cracked EXE
5) Change the EXE to run in Windows 7 Compatibility mode (Do NOT run as Admin, caused me crashing)
I have no clue why this worked lol, but now instead of taking 14-17 mins just to open the load screen it took about 8 secs and looks fantastic, no pink textures or black square shadows π
Hi Cindy I have the ultimate collection but I donβt have the fun with pets folderβ¦
Hi Cindy, I recently re-installed The Sims 2 and now whenever I load up the game in windowed mode it’s literally a square – how do I fix this?
You probably need to change your resolution in the game settings. Go to the graphics settings in-game and choose a bigger resolution. Also, make sure you used graphics rules maker so a bigger resolution is possible with your graphics card. Hope that helps!
Thank you so much! It 100% helped out!! I also had another question – how do I change the season lengths for Sims 2 with SimPE?
Hi Bree! The only way I know how to do it is download a mod that changes the Season length (to anything, doesn’t matter), open the package file in Sim PE (right click – open with) and then change the values to whatever you want. I used this one to change my seasons: https://modthesims.info/d/282183/longer-seasons-7-10-14-20-30-days-all-specific-seasons.html
Hi Cindy! I just wanted to stop by and say that I recently found you after researching issues with the game. I had to replace my video card and my game was NOT working properly. As a Sims 2 addict, you can imagine how horribly that impacted my game play and Sims life π You saved my years of play. I personally cannot thank you enough for all you do in your blogs and videos. Wishing you the best and just letting you know what you do/did made a difference.
Thank you! Glad I could help! π
I really like all the work you did, and it worked, but only once….I did all the steps, played for a while, saved, quit and then tried again with no luck….
I tried repeating the last part, but it did nothing…
Hello,
I tried everything on this list but when I copied the No-CD download to the CSBin I couldn’t open my game and a pop up would come up saying I hadn’t downloaded the Sims 2. I still can’t get the memory to change in logs.
I wanted to share the fix that worked for me, since I continued to have issues getting the 4GB patch to actually register with my game despite getting the success message. I tried the shortcut trick and that didn’t work either.
What finally worked was to use a new version of the exe file nicknamed George that I found here in a forum: http://www.leefish.nl/mybb/showthread.php?tid=9047 Post #8 has the link that worked for me!
Thank you! I was about to give up on Sims 2 with the crashing but I believe it’s better than Sims 3 or 4 and didn’t want to do that yet with all the time I spent making tings. Your instructions were easy to follow and I was able to apply with no issues. I was just putting up with the not too often crashed until this weekend when I made a huge shopping center lot and I guess I had to to much in it and it would crash every time.
That can happen with really large lots that have a lot of items! I love making big lots and sometimes I have to reign myself in. Lol
Just got the Sims 2 and I knew exactly where to go to find out how to get it working. Thank you so much! So weird to be playing it for the first time in 10 years lol
Yay! Have fun!
Hey cindy, sorry to be a pain but I was really wondering what pc you have to play the sims 2 on? Iβm really struggling to find the perfect one just for the sims 2. Thankyou. Love the videos!
Hi! You can see my PC specs on this page: https://pleasantsims.com/faqs/
Thank yoy, thank you, thank you.
Did I mention I wanted to thank you?
I am autistic and this game is tremendously important to me and I was going crazy not being able to run it on windows 10.
Hugs!
You’re very welcome!
Hey Cindy! I found this thread because I was able to find my charger for my super old laptop that still works and currently The Sims 2 works on it works completely fine but I wanted to update to Windows 10 so I can use this laptop to play other games as well as The Sims. However after reading all the steps, I realized my laptop only had 3GB of Ram with 2.75GB usable on a 64-bit operating system and I was wondering if I should even bother updating to Windows 10 and following these steps because I’m not sure if it’ll work? I don’t mind keeping this laptop solely for The Sims but I was hoping to be able to play some other games on this laptop. Do you think these steps will work in my situation? Or should I just play it safe and don’t bother updating Windows? For the record I haven’t done any of the steps except for looking at my logs and currently my game says the memory is 2812MB and the free memory is 1800MB. Thank you for your time!
how do i get the screen to stop flickering everytime i move my sim or camera? the screen blinks for a bit then comes back?
Hi, getting any help with getting the game to work would be very much appreciated. I’m pretty desperate right now, tbh. I’m trying to apply the graphics rules maker, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Every time I open the game, it’s the same default resolution, and when I try to load into the neighbourhood, it crashes. I had the game working for quite some time, but I needed to repair the game from Origin because it was saying some of the files had disappeared and it was no longer launching. I don’t understand why the graphics rules maker isn’t working any more. The 4gb patch has applied, afaik. Please please please help, I don’t know what else to do.
Hello!
I installed the patch and it worked (I used to have the pink glitch in the neighborhood view and in-game). But I now realized the pink glitch occur on community lots π
What can I do to fix that?
Yes!!!!!! I just got a new GPU and the game wouldn’t even load. Following all of this I can now play! Thank you so much! This was a life saver!
Hi!
When I tried the https://git.froggi.es/joshua/d9vk/-/jobs link, it asked for a username and password, I was wondering if there was a solution to this?
You can now download it here: https://github.com/Joshua-Ashton/d9vk
Click on the green “CODE” button and choose “Download Zip” to get the files. All the other steps should be the same.
Thank you so much Cindy! Iβll try it, and pray TS2 finally works.
Hi Cindy,
I can’t see any DLL files in the Zip download from the link above? Nor a folder called x32.. Sorry, could you please help?
Thanks
I’m not Cindy, but I ran into the same problem you did and I found a document that helped me.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/19JMr-FQSU3AlF7Kyvcrr7awTiHBDQSUNLG6qfaI6rOs/edit
Read the whole process to the end before you follow any steps, and don’t skim! Not all the warnings are up front. I don’t yet have a fully working game, but it solved the problem I was having where it crashed to desktop on start.
Hey Cindy, so I do not really know if my settings are now correct. After applying the 4gb patch my memory ist constantly at 4096, but my free memory is switching around after I opened and played the game. It is still pretty high and switches between 3800 and 4096, but it is not constantly at 4096 and that concerns me a little bit. I also already tried moving the .exe file to the desktop and into another folder, but it did not change anything. Before I mess more with my game I wanted to know if I actually need to or if my memory is fine that way. If you could help me with this I would be more than gratefull!
I’ve never heard of that happening, sorry! But it won’t hurt anything if your memory is 3800. It just means you don’t have the full 4096. It’s still better than 2k.
It’s not working! I am the sad.
Cindy, you saved me! I was using different patch, different methods but yours helped me! Thank you so much! Now I can play without crashing!
You’re welcome! Glad to help!
Hey Cindy, thank you for this fix! But uh, I installed this patch and the graphics rules maker just now, and I’m still getting blue/green pixels in random places in my game and other graphical glitches. They’re ones I’m willing to ignore for this great game but i’m afraid they’ll spread to the rest of my computers visuals, as thats what happened the last time I installed and tried to play Sims 2 on this computer. π
Sorry, I’ve never heard of this. Feel free to join the Discord and ask in our help channel. Maybe someone will know: Discord – https://discord.gg/ax5amx8
hi Cindy! love your channel and what you do, but also it’s my first time commenting on anything at all lol
sorry to have to bother you but in all my years of playing Sims 2 i’ve encountered some graphics issue that i haven’t really dealt with before ever. my game’s lighting has gotten really harsh. CAS and Live Mode are both affected and it’s like anything hit by light is just fully white. Live Mode i guess i can deal with lol but creating a new Sim is near impossible without a bad headache right after…
i was advised to get Graphics Rules Maker but anything i try with it is getting me an error that reads something similar to “cannot create back-up files”. Google search hasn’t really gotten me anywhere, so i’m wondering if anyone might know something about this! thanks so much for any advice!
p.s. thought i’d add i was able to do the 4GB patch with no problems. it didn’t seem to do anything about the lighting issue though. π
Hi, I tried out the first fix for my game, and it didnβt seem to work for me at all. Iβve been looking all over the internet but nobody seems to have the same problem as I do. Iβm running The Sims 2 Deluxe on disc on a rather old Dell (that originally had Windows Vista as the OS) computer that had Windows 10 put on it a couple years ago. It always worked just fine for me, even after the Windows 10 upgrade, but one day it just randomly stopped working? I figured it had something to do with the Custom Content I had, so I uninstalled and reinstalled all the packs, and of course that didnβt work either. Now Iβm just trying to get the base game to load on its own, but when I open the game, I donβt get any music, nor do I get that opening cutscene, I just get taken to the blue logo screen where it loads halfway, and then crashes. It does this no matter what I do. Iβm not sure what the issue is? I just donβt get why it worked for me for so long and then stopped working at random. I donβt have any computer specs off the top of my head but Iβm sure I can find them if needed. Any help would be really appreciated because I miss playing this game so much!
Hi Cindy,
I followed and installed the 4 GB patch and the Graphics Rules Maker. The patch worked on my config file, but when I tried to run the game I got the Direct X error. I went to Leefish but I dont recognize any of the video card sgr…not sure what to do now
Does anyone know how to uninstall the patch after you’ve tried it & it didn’t work? It didn’t help my crashing problem & it just made the game slower. I tried uninstalling & reinstalling the game but that didn’t work. Now I just wanna get my game back to the way it was ;_;
Hello
repaired on Origin, it will put the files back as before and the patch will be uninstalled
Hello,
I installed the patch, my game does not start, I have already deleted the cache files before suddenly I don’t have any more, how to do? thank you
Thank you for this wonderful guide. It was the very last thing on your list that fixed it for me. But I don’t feel it was a waste to do the first things on the list. I would have needed the 4gig patch and the graphics rules put my video card in the database. So I think that although they didn’t fix my problem I would have needed them anyway. Again thanks for this guide. I am happy to be able to play.
I’m so glad it worked for you!
OMGGG THANK YOU, the 4gb thing doesn’t seem to work with Sims Castaway Stories, but I can play thanks to the graphics rule maker π
hey guys, i had recently purchsed the sims 2 CD and ive been trying to install it but everytime i try theres and error with the files being moved so it never actually completes it!!
helppp meeeee
Hi anna. I don’t have any experience with the discs on Windows 10, but they should work relatively the same. What does the error message say?
Hi Cindy! I am having some problem with managing the 4GB patch. Now, I know I must sound like a noob, but you said unzip twice, and what should I do to unzip in these two cases? My file explorer doesn’t open up.
You just need to unzip the file you download – the patch itself. You’ll need a file archiving program to unzip files. I recommend 7-zip because it’s free but you can also use Winrar. You can find 7-zip here: https://www.7-zip.org/download.html Hope that helps!
Hi, Cindy!
Thanks for all your work on The Sims, thanks to you my game runs perfectly and looks great on Desktop Computer.
But I have this problem on my laptop. Wherever I install The Sims 2 Base Game, it works fine. But when I try to install expansion packs, it tells me, that the base game isnΒ΄t installed even though it is. Due to this I canΒ΄t even uninstall the game because it basically doesnΒ΄t exist. I write this here because I thought the 4patch could help, but it just doesnΒ΄t find the game. Would you know what to do?
Thank you!
Hey! When I apply the 4gb patch it works perfectly, but when I go and launch the game it comes up with an error from Origin stating; “Invalid license. Reason code = Invalid Cipher (0x0006)
Thanks!
I’ve never heard of this error, but it sounds like you might need to “Repair Game” through Origin. Right click on the game icon in origin and click on REPAIR THE GAME. Hopefully that will fix it! If not, I’d try contacting Origin.
I’ve tried repairing my game but I do I believe it gets rid of the patch and repeats when I apply it again so I don’t know what’s going on haha. Thanks for replying as well, love your videos!
Hi ! My game doesn’t really crash that ofter, but, there is one thing that will make it automaticaly crash ; invite more than one people/throw a party
Do you know why ? And how could I fix it ?
Sounds like a mod conflict to me. If you’re using mods, I would remove them and see if you still have the problem. If not, it’s a mod. If so, you may need to reinstall your game because that’s not supposed to happen. Good luck!
Hi Cindy! I tried all but it wont work. The error actually is just a plain prompt with nothing written on it. I was able to play for like 10 games but then it wont run. π Hope you can help.
Thank you so much! It had worked!
You’re welcome!
I have a problem. I don’t know what I should put for the section “Force Texture Memory” in Graphics Rules Maker. I put the same ‘amount’ as in the example (1024Mb), but should it be that?
Also, my game was lagging a bit after installing the GRM; I buy something, for example a bush by the grave, and suddenly some spots from the ground disappear for a moment!? Is it something to do with GRM, or how am I going to fix this?
Hello, im Danasia and I have issues involving me playing the sims2. I have the sims2 disc but i cannot play it because my pc does not have a disc holder thing…the only way for me to get the sims2 is for me to have it digitally but they dont have that anymore…what do you suggest?
The only way to get a legal copy of The Sims 2 is to get the disc version. If you don’t have a disc drive for your computer, you can buy one SUPER cheap – like $25 – on Amazon. Here’s one suggestion: https://amzn.to/3aH3wIS
Hi i know it is probably too late but i have done all these steps and my game still has an error message saying its crashed and terminated π I don’t know what else to do.
Sorry for the late reply! If you’re still having trouble, it’s probably beyond the scope of what I can help you with here. Please come join our Discord and post in the sims-2-help channel. There are a lot of knowledgeable people there who can help you further with troubleshooting. And I will jump in to help when I can! Here’s the invite link: https://discord.gg/jvHa2ks
Hey Cindy, i downloaded this the correct way and my sim keeps resetting! i deleted everything i downloaded today so it has to be this!
Hmm… The 4GB patch shouldn’t cause your Sims to reset. Try turning testing cheats on and an error box should pop up when your Sim resets. This will help you figure out what’s wrong.
Hi Cindy
I’m following your guide, but I don’t have a folder called “Origin Games” only “Origin”, and I can’t find the folder with the Sims expansions either.
I’m using the ultimate collection from Origin.
Help!
Hi Matina! It sounds like you have Origin set to install in a different location. This happened with my husband’s computer too. Go to Application Settings from the Origin menu and check to see where it is installing. That should tell you where your game files are. Here is a picture to show you where to look in Origin: https://i2.wp.com/crinrict.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/InstallationPath.jpg?ssl=1
I hope that helps!
Hi, I am attempting to play TS2UC for the first time on my laptop. I don’t have pink flashes, but just general flashes and when I would place an object, it would make the whole area disappear (you could see the 1st floor if you were placing on the 2nd floor., for instance). It would reappear if you moved the screen slightly, but it would do this every time. So I tried the 4GB patch and the graphic rule thing, as well as the DXVK. That resulted in the game crashing instantly, so I had to uninstall and reinstall the game 3 times. I then just installed the 4GB patch only. The game started just fine this time, but the flashing was still there. I exited te game and looked at the log config and saw that the Memory changed to 4096MB but the Free Memory remained at 2652MB. I am not sure where to go from here. Can you help?
Hi Mary! Everything I know about getting the game to work in Windows 10 is in this post. Some people’s computers just seem to work better with the game than others. Are you using an Nvidia Graphics card? Here is another solution you might try: http://www.leefish.nl/mybb/showthread.php?tid=9047&pid=45659#pid45659
DO ONLY STEP TWO found in this post. If that doesn’t work, you could try posting for help on the Leefish forums or just looking through their help section. There is a lot of good info there and knowledgeable people to help if you are still having problems: http://www.leefish.nl/mybb/forumdisplay.php?fid=21
Good luck!
Hi Cindy! Thank you so much for the help! It worked! I got a question though, how do I manage to download the expansion packs now? It installs but then after it says ”The update procress did not compete succesfully. Installation will now terminate.” Please help π
I don’t know, sorry. I have the Ultimate Collection and I don’t know of any way to legally download the expansion packs. I would recommend using the discs. And if you are using the discs, you may need to patch the game. Sorry I don’t really have any experience with using the discs recently. Here is some info on the updates/patches that might help: https://modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:TS2_Patches
Hi can you please help me out i’m trying to play the Sims 2 on my computer, i got the Sims 2 dvd version, and i can’t patch the game because i don’t have the ultimate collection and i dont know what that looks like or where to buy it except ebay or mazon can you please help me? Love your Videos Thank Sincerely Kendall Rudd
Hi Kendall! The steps for applying the 4GB patch are the same for the Disc version as for the UC. The path to find your .exe is just a little different. You need to go to Windows (C:) > Program Files (x86) > EA Games > The Sims 2 Mansion and Garden Stuff > TSBin
If you donβt have Mansion and Garden Stuff, navigate to the TSBin of the most recent expansion pack you have.
The remaining steps are the same. Hope that helps!
Hi Cindy! I’ve got very strange problem. I’ve played for more than 1 year on the Win10 (I fixed problems witch graphics) and now my game just crashed during launching a neighborhood. I thought it was because of some new mods. I deleted all of them and it didn’t help. None of the neighborhoods could be launched. I reinstalled game and still is the same problem and info that “application has crashed and will now terminate”. I tried all of yours methods and the others. Everything I did correctly but still there is nothing. Do You have any ideas what could help? Btw sorry for my English π
Hi Karolina! If you have the Ultimate Collection, my first suggestion would be to repair the game through Origin. If that doesn’t work, make sure when you uninstall that you completely remove the Sims 2 Folder from “My Documents.” You may have to manually delete it (back up any CC you want to keep first). Then run the game and allow a new Sims 2 Folder to be generated. Good luck!
Manual deleting files helped! So simple but I didn’t come up with it. Thank You so much! <3
You’re very welcome! π
Hi, my memory says 3976 instead of 4096, what happened along the way?
Hi Gracie! I’ve never seen that before, sorry! The only time I’ve seen it less is when the computer doesn’t have 4GB of memory available, but I don’t know how it could only have 3.9GB? Anyway, your game should be MUCH improved with 3976 at least if you can’t get it to recognize 4GB.
Hi! I tried to use your last tip (the D9VK), every time I paste all six files and click to enter the game, open the origin application, try to enter the application too and nothing. When I took them out, the game opened, do you have any idea what it might be? I put in TSBIN and would not open, please help me, I’m trying everything to stop and nothing works. (sorry for my bad english T-T)
If you have an older computer that doesn’t support Vulkan, this step will not work for you. That could be it. You can use this Vulkan test program here: https://github.com/skeeto/vulkan-test
If it says your computer does not support, than the D9VK fix won’t work. I will add this to the post too.
If your game just won’t open, you might try deleting your cache files.
I searched for so long… gave up on everything….and tried again today… nothing worked out… but … all of a sudden… your Website appeared and I tried one last time to fix this fucking issue. And it worked. Im so happy…. I love you from all of my heart. May any God bless you with all his love. Thank you! π

Thank you, works perfectly there is no bugs anymore – thank you so much π
So glad to hear it, Eva!
Hallo Cindy
It’s been years since I’ve played Sims 2, but tonight I wanted to try it again.
I followed your steps, but I don’t find the Sims 2 Folder in my Origin Game Folder
Any clues what to do about this?
Greetings from Germany =)
Hi Jasmin! Are you using the Disc version of the game or the Ultimate Collection from Origin?
Thanks for your blog. I have a question. I applied the fix, but I noticed a difference between my log and the log you posted. I currently have 32GB of RAM on my system.
Before and after the fix the Log stated/s the following:
Texture memory: 32MB
I noticed yours is listed at: 4096MB
I don’t know if that has anything to do with crashing when I change lots too, but I’m wondering how I can increase mine to at least match yours?
Hi Tanya. You will need to follow all the troubleshooting steps above if the patch doesn’t apply properly. This is absolutely everything I know about how to get it to work. Make sure you try applying tghe patch on the desktop. If that doesn’t work, you may need to use a cracked .exe in order to apply it (see the last section above).
Hello every one
Actually I still have the 800 by 600 problem
I don’t have any crash problems
How can I fix it ?!?!?!
Oh, Cindy! How I wish I knew about this post so long ago! I have been trying to play sims 2 for AGES on my win10. Although I think the sims 3 and 4 have their points, there is just no other game I love to play as much – and I definitely did not want to lose all the stories from the neighborhoods I had developed along the years.
Thank you SO MUCH for your post! It was so helpful and clear! My weekends are going to be so much more fun from now on!!
Oh, and I also deleted the only cache file showing as per the above suggestion. No difference.
Hope you can help!
Hi Cindy,
I’ve tried following all the instructions on my new desktop, as I decided I wanted to play Sims 2 again, given it’s my preferred version & i have so many expansion discs.
I’m still using my original 4CD copy for the record. Every time i try to start it up i get an “unspecified error”
I downloaded & ran my 4GB patch, but the problem i’ve found is that I have NOTHING in my logs folder. Completely empty.
You have a lot of positive feedback from others, so I’m hoping you might be able to help me sort this…
Thanks in advance
Unfortunately I’ve tried everything to get this game to run… If I get to the neighborhood, the textures are pink and if I load in to a family (sims are pink t-poses), I usually crash before that. I’ve tried the 4gb patch as well as using graphics rules maker.
Both things have not solved the issues of pink flickering textures all over the place, and crashing constantly. Everything I’ve read online says these should generally fix the problem, but it just hasn’t for me. Compatibility mode has done nothing for me either. This is all with the Ultimate Edition on Origin. Any ideas?
For reference, I have an RTX 2080ti, i9 9900k, and 32gb 3200mhz ram. Of course, this is running on Windows 10 which seems to be the source of all of these problems.
I have also tried disabling the shaders in game and while that does make some of the pink textures go away, not all of them do and the sims themselves are still completely pink t-poses. It seems like perhaps the game just won’t work with my system unfortunately. π
Your graphic card it too “modern” for the game to recognize the new technology. I’m on the same book the last few weeks as I recently purchased and installed a brand new RTX 2070 to replace my GTX 760 I had for almost a decade.
Anyway, after lots of research, I found that you’ll want a GTX that ends with a 60 as a GTX has similar technology the game would recognize. So I’m selling that RTX and bought myself a 960, and it’s working again.
Also, because I have an i7-4790k CPU, the quad-core is also “too new.” According to what I’ve found on Leefish forum, sims runs best on three core or less. Right now, my game would run great and play well although I haven’t tested how long it would run for as I haven’t ran the game for more than an hour yet. Today, I turned the game on and then took an almost 2 hours nap letting the game run. Moment I load a lot, it was flashing pink, then crash after leaving to the neighborhood. I’m thinking of building a separate build with older processor just for the Sims2 itself if the problem persists.
Thus, I would recommend downgrading your graphic card first and the fix to see if it works. If you’re having issues even with all the above fixes, it might also be that your CPU is too powerful.
this game works for me with out doing this.
Is this post still live, I need help please.
Hi Cindy! I’m wondering if you’d be able to help me–even when I install the 4GB patch and use the graphics rule setting, my game fails to launch. I’ll click “play” but my desktop will just reload at a small resolution (cutting off my screen at the same time), and I’m unable to left or right click anything. I can use key commands to open Task Manager, where my sims2 game is always not responding.
I’ve tried patching my .exe file and dragging to desktop, as well as trying to apply the patch AFTER dragging to desktop, but nothing is working. Do you see anything you recognize as the issue?
Also posted to reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/thesims/comments/cdrqqs/sims_2_on_windows_10_issues/
Hey thanks for your reply π … i already tried that too, but the memory still skips back to 1024 MB. Soo i cant use 4GB memory and my game crashes when i load into a family :/ and i still have the violet glitch too, even with the graphic rule maker … i also used every exe and application as admin.
Meh this is so bad; its the CD-Version cause u cant download the game from anywhere anymore … even trying to get an origin copy does not work anymore, cause the support does not give you digital codes anymore.
Im using an 8 core processor, 32 GB RAM and have a NVIDIA GTX 1080 … but cant Play Sims 2 π XD
I also tried to manullay fix these issues, but im not a programmer … and i read the cd version is very very bad for Windows 10 anyway π
I dont know if u have any tips what i still could try hehe.
Hi Dominik. There’s one last thing you can try. Replace your .exe file with the more flexible version found on this page: http://www.leefish.nl/mybb/showthread.php?tid=7800&pid=40665#pid40665
Click on the “No CD Hack for M&G” to download.
Rename Sims2EP9.exe to Sims2EP9.___exe.
Copy the new .exe file you downloaded into your CSBin folder (where the original is).
Apply the patch to the new .exe file and try again.
You may need to apply the patch on the desktop and then move to CSBin if that doesn’t work.
This usually fixes the most severe cases when it comes to the disc version. If this doesn’t work, I’m all out of ideas, but I think it will.
Good luck!
Hey Cindy, ty for your effort.
I tried that too, but it also could not fix the crashes and the pink lightning glitch :/
I also contacted Jenna from the helpful thread for these issues, but she said basically, that Sims 2 is a mess for Windows 10 and that i mostly cant do anything. Thats why she uses Windows 7.
I had to deinstall the games now. Its sad, but Win 10 just cant deal with Sims 2 … the game is sadly just too old for all the modern programms and hardware π
But thank you for your help and advice! Hopefully Sims 5 will be a bit more like Sims 2 or Sims 3; Sims 4 is just a mess in my opinion.
Best regards
Dominik π
Hi Cindy, maybe you know what to do. I am using Windows 10.
I have downloaded the Sims 2 Ultimate Collection, wanted to use the 4 GB Patch and the graphics rules maker … but when i use the .exe-application in the TSBin-Folder, these changes do not work properly.
When i check the log-file, it still says that the game only uses 1024 MB Memory insted of 4096 MB. Thats the Windows 10 bug, right? So the graphic rule maker does not work, the violet glitch still appears and the game crashes still from time to time …
Sooo afterwards i moved the exe-file to the CSBin-Folder. Now the game uses 4096 MB Memory, it does not crash anymore. But! now the graphics rules maker does not find the game anymore. That means i cant use full texture memory and the violet glitch still appears … i dont know what to do anymore.
Do you know how to fix the Windows 10 Bug that i can use the exe-file in the TSBin-Folder with 4GB Memory OR how to make the graphic rules maker find the exe-file in the CSBin-Folder? I sadly cant play the game atm.
I would really appreciate your help and maybe you know what to do.
Best regards,
Dominik
Hi Dominik,
Since you have The Ultimate Collection, you shouldn’t have to move the .exe to the CS Bin. I would move it back to the TS Bin and try patching on the desktop.
You just saved my life!!!! I thought I was going to be stuck in the 800×600 hell forever. Thank you SO much!
Thank you so much. I just started watching your channel and Iβm really enjoying it. I followed this and my games has never worked so well. It just zips all over the place. Loaded down with mods and CCβs. This is awesome, thanksπ¦
So glad I could help! Thanks so much for watching and I’m happy you’re enjoying your game! π
after I applied the patch, I tried to start up the game but a few moments later it had a little window pop up and it said “unspecified error”. is there anything I can do?
Hi Hayden! Did you delete your cache files? That usually fixes this problem.
Hi Cindy! Is this fix only for Windows 10 or for the older models (f.e. Windows 7)?
Hi Stephan! Yes, these fixes will also work with Windows 7! π
Hi, Cindy!
Maybe you can help me. I keep getting the following message when I attempt to start the game:
“Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a direct X9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer. The application will now terminate.”
Tried lots of various things including installing DirectX 9 libraries (drivers are fully updated and the version of DirectX is 12). Still getting the same issue. Tried solutions described in your article with no apparent result.
I will attach the screenshot of my PC’s specs. Hope that helps.
Hi Arthur! If you’re getting the DirectX 9 error after using the graphics rules maker, you will need an additional texture fix found here: http://www.leefish.nl/mybb/showthread.php?tid=6881 Good luck!
Thanks for your help. Though could you please let me know where I can look for Vendor, Device, Board and Chipset info of my video card GTX 760?
I’ve managed to find the following in one of your documents:
vendor “NVIDIA” 0x10b4 0x12d2 0x10de
card 0x13d7 “NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M”
card 0x17c8 “NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti”
card 0x139b “NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M”
card 0x1187 “NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760”
card 0x1341 “NVIDIA GeForce 840M”
card 0x1140 “NVIDIA GeForce 820M ”
card 0x0008 “NV 1”
card 0x0009 “NV 1”
card 0x0010 “NV 2”
But I can’t seem to get it right in my config-log.txt. Moreover, it didn’t feature this info at all in the first place. It only has date of generation, Global properties info and blank options including: “Device 0”, “Options”, “Option properties” and “Device properties”.
If I try to add some lines to that document and run the game it gives me the same DirectX 9.0c error and just deletes whatever I added getting back to the original state.
Hi Arthur! I’m afraid this is beyond what I can help you with. If the fix isn’t working, I would recommend creating a thread on LeeFish and asking for help there. Good luck to you!
hey Cindy! my memory said 2048mb so i applied the patch, did what u told and now it has 3980mb and won’t work, is there any other way to let me play ts2? i have the UC from origin
Hi Martyna! You should still be able to play, but you might run out of memory and get crashes. When you say it won’t work, do you mean the game doesn’t launch?
I’ve meant it won’t even let me create a new sim (whenever i try to add a sim it just crashes) or play a family that has been already created, it loads for a while then a notification about a crash pops up. i’ve played ts2 normally without any crashes before i updated my win 8.1 to win 10, and i probably tried everything to make it work, but unsuccessfully
Hi, I have all the expations and stuff pack for the sims 2 but they are on disk and I can’t get the patch to work no matter how much I try and ides how to maybe fix it??
Hi Ewelina! Everything I know about applying the patch is in this article. Since you have the disc version, you might need to move the .exe file. I would recommend watching Jessa’s video here since she also has the disc version: http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?p=5376749#post5376749
The video at the top of the post from The Jessa channel tells you how to move the .exe from the TSBin to the CSBin at around 5:25.
Hi Cindy!
First, sorry for my english but i hope you’ll understeand :((
I instal this 4gb patch at first, but it didin’t work, because from 2048mb i have 1024mb. I did this deskop method and nothing change. My game is still crashing and i don’t know what to do anymore :((
Hi Isabel! I’m so sorry you’re having this problem. Everything I know about how to fix it is in this article. Dragging the icon to the desktop and then applying the patch there should work. If it doesn’t, I am at a loss. You can try asking for help on the Leefish Forums. If anyone can help you, it is them: http://www.leefish.nl/mybb/forumdisplay.php?fid=21 Good luck!
my game flashes and glitches sometimes but its black should i still use your suggestion?
Hi Winter! I can’t say for sure if this will fix your problems. But in my experience, most of the graphical issues people experience with The Sims 2 on modern computers can be corrected by applying the 4GB patch and using the graphics rules maker. Good luck! It certainly won’t hurt anything. π
Hey Cindy!
I downloaded the first mod and it worked pretty good! There were still some resolution issues so I installed the second download, but now it won’t let me open the game. I was wondering if you knew how to uninstall it? I tried going to the website and emailing the maker but it’s not work.
Thank you!
Hi Chelsea! Does the game just not load or what exactly happens? This wouldn’t be a problem with the graphics rules maker. You might just need to delete your cache files.
Deleting the cache files fixed it! Thank you Cindy! Yes it was saying there was an issue with the graphics card after I had downloaded the graphics rules maker.
I’m so glad it worked for you Chelsea! That’s great news! π
I think once I installed the 4GB Patch it broke my game, whenever I try to launch the game it says it needs permission and I say yes, origin pops up and loads but then it asks for permission again, I say yes, and nothing happens. The game doesn’t launch π
Hi Danny! Sorry you’re having problems. This could be because you have permissions on your .exe file. Do you normally try to run your game as an administrator? If so, try removing this and any compatibility mode you have set. If the game still doesn’t run, you might just need to delete your cache files. In your documents folder, navigate to Documents\EA Games\The Simsβ’ 2 Ultimate Collection and delete two files named Accessory.cache and Groups.cache. If that doesn’t work, I’ll see if I can help you further. π
hi cindy, i did everything you said but i dont have Accessory.cache and Groups.cache cause i never got the game to run, the game doesnt crash anymore but now it wont load up at all..
Please help me! I want less edges on my sims, but it causes flickering but I insert 4gb patch but is only flickering all the time! Tell me how to do! I am tired of that stupid flickering… π
Hi Ana! I have replied to you on Youtube. I believe you need to use the graphics rules maker to fix your problem. π
Hey there, thanks for the fantastic article! I installed the game to my daughter’s computer and had all sorts of graphical issues and crashes. I installed the patch and downloaded the rules and it definitely is more stable. However, it still does some weird stuff (black graphical issues when using the wall tool and create a sim) and still crashes. Have any other idea of what I can do? Her computer has a integrated card. So it’s nothing special.
Hi again Cindy (Sorry if I keep popping up all the time!). I re-installed my sims 2 game today and applied the 4gb patch again and my ram is still at 1024 mb. I’m extremely confused as to why this is, but my game seems to load up fine. Do you think it should be okay if I don’t apply the patch, because I’m hoping to get CC soon. Thanks so much for all of your help. Thanks again π
Hi again! I think you might have crashing problems if you’re only able to use 1024 mb of memory, but the only way to know for sure is to try. I don’t know why the patch isn’t applying for you. Did you try to move the .exe file as shown in Jessa’s video? If so, I’m afraid I’m all out of suggestions. You could try posting for help on the MTS forums. Good luck!
Yes, I did move the .exe file into the CSbin and loaded up my game just fine. The only thing was when I went back into my log it still said “1024MB”. I was considering just editing the note, but I don’t want to mess my game up. Thanks for all your help though and I’ll try the MTS forum. (By the way, loving the new website design!)
Hi Noorhan! I know this is an old comment, but I wanted to let you know I found a new solution for this problem in case you never figured it out. Try dragging the .exe file to your desktop and applying the patch there. I have confirmed this works when the patch won’t apply and update memory for at least one other person. I’ve updated this post with instructions too.
Hi! I know this may be old, but I found that if you uncheck the compatibility mode for Windows XP at the compatibility tab of the properties menu, the log correctly displays 2048 MB of memory. Now I’m gonna try to apply the 4 gb patch
Thanks for the tutorial Cindy!
Hi Cindy, sorry to bother you again but I tried following the video tutorial and I ended up getting less ram? Now I have memory- 1024MB Free memory- 912MB. Maybe I installed something incorrectly or deleted something I wasn’t supposed to. I’m thinking of uninstalling the game and starting over (I don’t have any played households so its’ fine!) Maybe I can try re-applying the patch that way? If you have any other suggestions I’m open to them. Thanks π
Hi Noorhan! Yes, I’m sorry! I have no idea how you could have less RAM. Try reinstalling the game and the patch again and see if that works. π
Will do π€π
No idea how old this is but I found my RAM was reduced to 1024MB when I set the game to compatibility mode. I reapplied the patch and removed compatibility mode and it is 4gb and running very well.
Hi Cindy, when I installed the patch and went into my game and exited out to go check my log it still says “2048” for memory. I was a little confused since I got the “Patch successfully installed” pop up and the backup file. Thanks for any help! π
Do you think it’s because I ran as in administrator, because that was the way I did it to get into the file without manually putting in the “4gb patch” into the file myself? Sorry if I’m a bit confusing!
I don’t think that would be the problem. A commenter above had the same issue and he resolved it by moving the .exe file.
Check out this thread for more in-depth help:

That should fix your problem, but if it doesn’t let me know and we’ll try something else. Good luck!
Thanks so much, Cindy!ππ I’ll make sure to try it out and see. Thanks for your help again.
I’m having the same issue! So sad π
I can’t seem to get it to work… any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
Yes! I need to update this tutorial with some troubleshooting tips. Some people need to move their .exe file in order for the patch to work. I’m not sure why this is necessary for some people and not others, but it appears to work.
Please read this thread on MTS and watch the video by The Jessa Channel.

Hi Cindy!, thanks for making this tutorial! I just bought the sims 2 (yas, it’s coming soon!) and I was getting a bit anxious because of my pc using windows 10, but glad there was a fix. I was wondering though, are there any other fixes that you would recommend? Thanks so much again :3
Hi Noorhan! If you have a newer graphics card, you might have to use the graphics rules maker to ensure the game can recognize it. Here’s a link: https://www.simsnetwork.com/tools/graphics-rules-maker Good luck and have fun! Let me know if you have any issues and I’ll do my best to help you! π
Alrighty, thanks a lot! I’ll make sure to let you know if I have any other problems Happy simming! π
OMG IT WORKED!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING ME!
I’m so happy Andres!!! Have fun playing your new, smoother game! π
I’m gonna try that. Thank you so much for your help!!!!!! You’re the best
Hey, in my folder says 1024MB instead of 2048. Does that means my laptop is not good enough or? I don’t understand!! I can play The Sims 3 with high settings. Could you help? Thanks!
Hi Andres! Do you know how much RAM your laptop has? Here’s a link to show you how to find out if you don’t know: https://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000149.htm
As long as you have at least 4GB of RAM, you should be fine. Just apply the patch and it should work. Even if you don’t, you still might be able to play. Are you using Windows 10 and are you having problems with crashing?
Ok I’ve checked and I have 8GB of RAM. I’ve done everything I have to do from the tutorial but it keeps saying TS2 is using 1024MB. Weird!!
Do you have the Ultimate Collection or the disc version of the game?
Ultimate Collection from Origin (and by the way no, I don’t have any crashing problems but it just feels like the game is not running as smooth as it could?
Hmm. The only other thing I can think of is you might try moving the .exe file. This works for people with the disc version, but it might work for you too. You should definitely be able to use more than 1GB RAM.
A person from MTS was having the same problem and after moving the .exe they said it changed from 1024 to 4096. http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?p=5376749#post5376749
The video at the top of the post from Jessa channel tells you how to move the .exe from the TSBin to the CSBin at around 5:25.
Let me know if that works! If it does, I will add it to the tutorial in case anyone else has the same problem. If not, maybe we can try something else. Good luck!
Hi Cindy! What kind of laptop do you use for the Sims 2? I’m currently looking for a few laptops that are affordable but can play the game as smoothly as possible.
Could you help?
Thanks!
Hi Stephan! I play The Sims 2 on a desktop computer, but I think most modern laptops can run the game fine. Here are the recommended specs:
CPU: Pentium III or Athlon
CPU SPEED: 800 MHz with a T&L capable Video Card (2.0 GHz without Hardware T&L Video Card)
RAM: 256 MB
OS: Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista/Windows 7
VIDEO CARD: 32 MB 3D accelerated video card (NVIDIA GeForce2/ATI Radeon VE/Intel Extreme Graphics or better)
TOTAL VIDEO RAM: 32 MB
You can easily run it on Windows 10 with the fixes mentioned above. Good luck!
Hi Cindy! I’m having the same issue. I did the patch, it went from 1042 to 4096, my ram is 8GB. But it STILL crashes once I try to create a sim. Do you know any other solutions? You can always email me.
Hey Cindy, for some reason I don’t have an EA option in my program file folder as I had to download the game since they took it off origin (RIP i know I watched your video and signed the petition). So I have no idea where to put the 4gb patch as my game only shows 2048MB of memory π
Do you know where I could place it? I don’t have a ts folder any expansion pack folders when I open the EA games from just my documents folder
I have the same problem and moving the .exe doesnt change the memory in the log. But: The game doesn’t chrash instantly anymore.
So I think nevertheless it helped. xD
